The Produce Capture Institute (PCI), led by Second Harvest Heartland, was formed in 2013. It is the first peer-to-peer learning and teaching initiative within the Feeding America network, specifically focused on locally sourcing unutilized agricultural products. The ultimate goal of the PCI is to bring more fruits and vegetables to the tables of our hungry neighbors.
What PCI does
- Identify and integrate business-based solutions into the produce rescue process.
- Facilitate the expansion of produce rescue innovation currently activated.
- Learn and teach successful produce capture techniques that can be applied to member food banks across the network.
The Produce Capture Institute initiative has been specifically designed to support the “source to excess” philosophy and complement regional produce sourcing and other existing produce initiatives.
